Is Ceramic Coating Worth It For A New Car

A new car is the easiest car to protect, because the paint has not yet collected two years of car park marks and bad washes. That is the genuine argument for coating it early, and it is a good one.

It is not the same as saying every new car should be coated. Whether it is worth it depends on how long you are keeping it, where it parks, and whether you will maintain it afterwards.

A coating gives you a bonded, sacrificial layer above the clear coat from day one. In practice that means bug residue and bird droppings are far less likely to etch before you get to them, washing takes less effort, and the factory gloss stays looking factory for longer.

It also means the paint gets properly inspected and corrected before anything is locked in, which for most new cars is more valuable than people expect.

It will not stop a stone off a truck on the Hume. It will not stop a shopping trolley or a car park door ding. It will not stop scratches from an automatic brush wash, and it will not remove the need to wash the car.

If stone chips are your main worry on a new car, the honest answer is paint protection film across the front end, with a coating over the top so the whole car cleans the same way.

Usually, yes, and this surprises people. New cars arrive carrying transport film marks, wash swirls picked up at the dealership, and sometimes machine haze from a pre delivery polish. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it.

Compare the written answers rather than the package names. A dealer add on and an independent coating can be very different pieces of work at similar money.

It tends to make sense when you:

• plan to keep the car for several years
• want washing to be quick and predictable
• will either maintain it properly or have it maintained
• understand that chips and scratches need a different product
• want the paint inspected and prepared before build up develops

It makes less sense on a short term lease car you will hand back, or if your only real concern is road impact damage.

As soon as it can be properly inspected, prepared and cured. Some owners book it around delivery, others drive the car for a few months and decide later. Paint never becomes too old to coat, but waiting usually adds cleaning and correction to the job.

Weaker beading does not automatically mean the coating has failed. Traffic film and mineral deposits mask surface behaviour all the time. Wash it properly first, then assess.
