Five Ceramic Coating Myths Car Owners Still Believe

Ceramic coating is a genuinely good product sold with a genuinely silly amount of noise attached. Here are five claims that come up constantly, and what is actually true.

It does not. A coating is measured in microns and resists chemicals, UV and very light marring. It will not stop a stone chip, a key, a branch or a brush wash. If impact protection is the goal, paint protection film is the product that does that job.

Washing gets easier, not optional. Traffic film still builds up, and left long enough it masks the coating's behaviour and can damage the surface. The cars that still look incredible years later are the ones that get washed properly.

Correction removes swirls. Coating preserves whatever state the paint is in when it goes on. Coating swirled paint means owning shiny swirls for the next several years.

Durability figures come from controlled conditions with correct preparation and maintenance. Real life includes Melbourne UV, outdoor parking, highway kilometres and however the car actually gets washed. Treat the number as a product tier, not a countdown.

They are not. Chemistries differ, application methods differ, curing requirements differ, and the installer's preparation matters more than any of it. Two cars with the same coating and different preparation will not look the same in two years.

Only where the product is designed for layering, and only within its instructions. Piling on coats of a product that was not engineered for it can cause high spots and uneven curing rather than more protection.

Well maintained paint helps a car sell, and a coating helps keep paint well maintained. It is not a line item a buyer pays extra for on its own.

When one quote promises scratch resistance and another describes correction stages and coverage, you are not comparing two prices for the same thing. You are comparing a claim against a scope of work.
