How To Wash And Maintain A Ceramic Coated Car

A coating makes washing easier. It does not make washing optional, and it does not make bad technique safe. Most coatings that disappoint were washed badly rather than applied badly.

Here is the routine that keeps a coating performing.

Leave the car alone for the curing period you are given at collection. During that window keep it out of rain where you can, do not wash it, and get anything acidic such as a bird dropping off gently with plenty of water rather than scrubbing.

• a pH neutral car shampoo
• a clean, soft wash mitt kept only for paint
• separate brushes and a separate mitt for wheels
• a large soft drying towel
• a hose with a decent spread of water

Out of direct sun, on cool panels, and not in the middle of a hot Melbourne afternoon. Water drying on hot paint is how you get mineral spotting on an otherwise perfect finish.

Wheels, arches and tyres carry brake dust and road grit. Do them first, with their own bucket and their own brushes, and never let those tools near the paint afterwards.

Rinse the whole car thoroughly from the top down before anything touches it. On a coated car a surprising amount of dirt simply leaves at this stage, and every particle removed now is a particle not being dragged across the paint later.

One bucket of shampoo solution, one of clean rinse water. Load the mitt, wash one panel in straight lines rather than circles, then rinse the mitt in the clean bucket before reloading. Top to bottom, leaving the dirtiest lower panels until last.

Get every trace of shampoo off, including shuts, mirror housings and badge recesses where solution collects and dries into streaks.

Do not let it air dry. Use a large soft towel and pat or draw it gently across the panel rather than scrubbing. A coated surface releases water easily, so this takes far less effort than it does on bare paint.

When it is dirty rather than on a fixed schedule. For a Melbourne daily driver parked outside that is usually every one to two weeks. A garaged weekend car can go considerably longer.

Wash it properly first. Traffic film sits on top of the coating and masks its behaviour completely, and a decontamination wash restores it far more often than people expect. If it still looks flat after a proper wash, that is worth a conversation.

• polishes and cutting compounds, which remove coating
• letting bird droppings or sap sit for days

Not necessarily. A compatible topper can restore slickness and add a sacrificial layer, but the wrong product can smear and can make it harder to assess what the base coating is doing. Ask what suits the system on your car before buying anything.

If water behaviour has genuinely changed after a proper wash, if the paint feels rough rather than slick, or if a panel has been repaired or repainted. Any of those is worth an inspection rather than a guess.
